Mary Marsh Stott was born on 21 January 1891 in Bradford, Yorkshire. Her mother’s name was Susannah Stott (nee Ibbotson) but no father’s name is given on her birth certificate. However, the Parish Register of Holy Trinity Church in Bradford, where Mary was baptised on 13 August 1891, records the name of her father as ‘Charles Edward’.
According to the 1891 UK Census, Susannah Ibbotson was working as a housekeeper for Charles E. Marsh at his home at 127 Edderthorpe Street in Bradford. It seems probable that Mary’s middle name, ‘Marsh’, was intended to identify Charles Edward Marsh as her father.

Mary’s surname, Stott, results from the marriage of Susannah to William Henry Stott in 1877. This took place in the same church in which Mary would later be baptised.

Susannah and William had at least five children together. They were all baptised at Holy Trinity Church. Their last child, Mary Emma Stott, was born on 18 January 1888. It is not known exactly what happened between William and Susannah after this date. William has not been located on the 1891 UK Census, but by 1901 he appears with a different wife, Hannah, at 158 Queens Road in Sheffield.
Mary was always known as ‘Polly’ within her family and it is by this name that she is listed on the UK Census of 1901. She is record as living at 14 Hall Street, Bradford. The head of the household is given as George Scott, a widower. Susannah appears with three children, Polly’s younger half brothers and sister – Gordelia, Joseph and John.

On 5 September 1908 Mary Marsh Stott married George Tullett at the Register Office in Bradford. At the time she was living at 23 Birk Street and was employed as a worsted twister.
Polly and George eventually had six children together – Thomas, James, Harry, Mary, George (‘Judd’) and Leonard. Polly and her family were living at 18 Duke Street, Huddersfield, Yorkshire when her sons Harry and George were baptised.
Polly died on 6 July 1987 aged 96. She shares her grave with her husband George and her son Leonard’s in-laws, Blanche Taylor (nee Earnshaw) and Joseph Barber Taylor. George Stead Scott, with whom Polly and her mother were living in 1901, also occupies the same plot.
